I grew up in a residence with a Thai father and an American mom who had grown up in Asia, so most evenings, evening meal started out with opening up the lid of the rice cooker to expose a steaming pot of contemporary rice. Even my mother's most solidly American casseroles have been served with a facet of white jasmine rice. Rice was the heart of the plate. Rice made it a food.
